“Jane you ignorant slut.” Notes on the media.

“Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.”

— Mark Twain

Donanld Trump is a malignant troll, a demogogue and a fascist.

His attacks on the press are the toxic spaff of a thug.

Calling the press the enemy of the people – a rhetorical Molotov cocktail no doubt gifted to him by Gruppenführer Steve Bannon – is the sort of binary logic of atrophied torch lit ceremony goons who can be found burning books in Munich, digging long corpse filled ditches in the Ukraine, or executing people for wearing glasses in China.

Or wearing MAGA hats.

Whatever its mistakes, hypocrisy, mendacity, or corruption, the press must be defended against tyranny.

But part of that defense must include an honest inventory of the mistakes, hypocrisy, mendacity and corruption of the press.

No honest discourse can ignore the fact of Yellow Journalism and how the press has consistently aided and abetted tyrants and would be dictators by ginning up the atavistic mob to lynch or burn ghettos or support imperial adventures resulting in spasms of mass murdering sadomasochistic opera.

From screaming headlines about the threat posed by Chinese immigrants and their opium dens to the hysteria about non-existent Weapons of Mass Destruction; from You provide the pictures and I’ll provide the war to Light at the end of the tunnel, the press has sinned just as much as it has been sinned against.

Which brings us to Hadley Freeman of The Guardian who dropped a deuce in the punch bowl and offered it to the audience as a fragrant example of her shock – her shock – at what she claims is the revival tent con job atmosphere that, she breathlessly tells us, is the new normal of contemporary culture.

Skirt hiked, squatting over the punch bowl, stepping on the hors d’oeuvres and the facts here’s how she begins:

“Unless you are Bob Dylan in the 60s, or Bret Easton Ellis in the 90s, it is very hard to capture the zeitgeist when you are still living through it. But while I have yet to write my The Times They Are A-Changin’ or American Psycho, I’m going to describe this era as the age of the scam. Everywhere you look, there are people who have figured out ways to game our shoddy system, from politics to pop culture, and who are making inordinate amounts of money out of nothing or worse. Nothing feels entirely true; everything feels calculated to manipulate. Authenticity, instead of being a descriptor, has become a marketing concept.”

First, obviously, the idea that American history, or any History, can be reduced to two writers is not just preposterous it is preposterous in the manner of a teenager making a YouTube video on Monday that says, they love x, and on Tuesday saying they don’t because y is the coolest thing ever – and being taken seriously.

But worse than that is the idea (as such) that Brett Easton Ellis belongs in the same conversation as a seminal genius.

Which leads to the even more absurd idea (sic) that Ellis, a cynical, petulant giant pigmy of talent, captured anything except the prefabricated ersatz “moment” manufactured by marketing weasels riding the first wave of give Wall Street a jaw shattering blow job deregulation and carnival barker regurgitated 1950s era commie baiting hysteria ushered in by the corporate fascists at the heart of the Reaganite counter revolution.

Which in turn amputates the facts from History and aims to erase memory while substituting opinion for truth and, ironically, and in a sinister and perverse manner, imitates the alternative, industrial scale gaslighting of Trump and his gang of moral hermaphrodites as they gin up the mob in order to establish a blunt form of fascism to replace the more effective and far more subtle fascism already running the empire.

Or to put it another way, Hadley Freeman is catastrophically stupid and The Guardian is an editorially rudderless out of control herd of cynicism, toxic lies, distortions and half truths, wrapped inside the smug sense of moral superiority common to the we are woke cadres of the bespoke left.

But having pinched a loaf into the public record, Freeman isn’t done.

Launching herself from the punchbowl she sticks the dismount with this:

“Some have argued that (Elizabeth) Holmes represents the dangers of “white feminism”, because she seems to demonstrate how the lean-in culture, as advocated by Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, endorses privileged white alpha women. But Holmes was always supported by men, not women, let alone feminists. It was male journalists who adoringly profiled her in tech and finance magazines, and it was men – including Henry Kissinger, the economist George Shultz…”

This of course is wrapping yourself in a bloody tampon to say that in addition to the new mendacity (which pretends the old mendacity never existed), the enemies of woke, the Thanos to #MeToo are…MEN!

Which of course is fundamentally no different than the hipsters from Berlin with the file fetish saying that, when they hear the word culture they reach for their guns.

Freeman is saying, culture has not occurred, history has not occurred except as we (the royal woke pseudo left) define it and curate it and turn the telescope around so your view is from the wrong end to a distorted vision of reality.

Lady Macbeth?

Who?

The women who denounced Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary?

The Children’s Hour?

The women who help police Gilead?

Miss Wonderly?

Maggie Thatcher?

Eva Peron?

Indira Gandhi?

Leni Riefenstahl?

No idea what you’re talking about.

Memory?

History?

Facts?

Culture?

Don’t be silly?

But then there’s the rest of the logical train wreck.

Henry Kissinger is a witness for the prosecution as it makes the case that today’s mendacity with its Trump fueled cult of greed is good is proof that things were better in the past?

Speaking of Hank’s former boss, Hunter S. Thompson said, he was so crooked that he needed a team of goons to screw him into his pants every morning.

And as to Nixon’s Hand, we would say Kissinger – a man whose blood soaked vapor trail of lies stretches from mass graves in S.E. Asia to McCain’s funeral – is so dishonest that if it were two o’clock on Monday and he said it was two o’clock on Monday, any rationale person would get a second opinion.

What Freeman is saying, and what The Guardian is endorsing, is that Mark Twain told us nothing about America (and the world as a whole) and its propensity for being a sucker born every minute and worshiping at the altar of the huckster.

What Freeman is telling us, and what The Guardian is endorsing, is that The Great Gatsby (an epic about mendacity, distortions, conspiracies, within still more conspiracies) is at best a cultural curio of no significance, or, never occurred.

Dashiell Hammett and Ray Chandler and the excavation of America’s criminal DNA?

The Godfather?

Chinatown?

Network?

A Gentleman’s Agreement, Do the Right Thing and the truth of the big lie that America is a country where bigotry only exists in a museum exhibit?

Three Days of the Condor and an excavation of the sinister reality of everything from the Palmer Raids to the Orwellian police state?

The Sting?

All the President’s Men?

All the King’s Men?

Wont Get Fooled Again?

Atlantic City, and Born in the USA?

Hemingway and the brutal truth about the price we pay for the systemic lies of a morally bankrupt world?

Faulkner?

Upton Sinclair?

Sinclair Lewis?

The Culture Industry?

Chekov?

Dostoevsky?

Kafka?

Hearst and what the lie factory did to Wells and Citizen Kane?

And for that matter, Citizen Kane as an examination of the madness of the new money aristocrats selling lies and cynicism?

Reefer Madness?

The Yellow Peril?

The Red Menace?

Teapot Dome?

The lonesome death of Hattie Carroll?

Joe McCarthy?

Roy Cohen?

Get the fuck out of here.

The Guardian (and the rest of the establishment media) not only is wrong, iresponsible and arrogant, exactly like Trump, it is contemptuous of the Below The Line comments it invites from readers who point out how absurd they are.

And the reason for that is the cynical truth of The Guardian and the corporate media.

They proudly proclaim how they have no fire wall requiring pay for content. The truth is they use comments as evidence of clicks which become a form of currency they show to advertisers to convince them the platform is financially solvent and viable.

The price for this is a locked in systemic contempt for the people who want the press to succeed in its obligation to keep an eye on the government.

Using the open comment threads as a way to gin up the mob by printing toxins disguised as journalism they invite criticism and dissent and provoke arguments between readership cadres and when the readers become heated, when they are agitated by the media’s shit on a stick, by the gross stupidity of the opinions expressed, the comments are censored, the threads are closed and with no regard for the informed criticism received, they strike the tent, and move the carnival down the road to the next set of lies broadcast as gospel and pretend that they have said nothing – the past either does not exist or exists only as the truth in a media snow globe which they will periodically shake in an effort to sell the idea that the weather has changed.

Want to know how Trump succeeds?

Look in the fucking mirror.

Update: 6.12/19

Below is a link to another stellar piece by Freeman. in it she makes the compelling case that Roman Polanski is a pig guilty of raping an underage girl.

All true.

She also highlights the systemic hypocrisy of the entertainment industry and several of its major figures who have supported Polanski through brilliant examples of pretzel logic.

She also highlights how this hypocrisy undermines the credibility of the industries support for #MeToo.

Which of course creates a conundrum.

If the alleged victims are to be believed and their supporters include hypocrites making excuses for a child rapist, and critics of #MeToo highlight how the movement includes hypocrites, making excuses for a child rapist exactly how does Ms. Freeman propose to curate this circular firing squad?

See the white smoke pouring from Ms. Freeman’s ears here:
